Alpaca Fence
The primary function of fencing for alpacas is preditor control. Because
of their gentle nature, alpacas are not known for escaping or testing
their boundaries. For an alpaca owner or fiber producer, a safe, effective
fence is priceless. There are many types of fencing you could use - but the following is what we recommend as the most effective
means of protecting your valuable livestock. We recommend you start with
the following - but be advised some situations and geographic locations
may require the addition of electrified wire near the ground (on exterior
side) for more control.
Woven Wire Fence
Solidlock 3" spacing is recommended due to the following:
- The smaller spacing helps prevent animal's head or limbs from becoming
trapped/tangled in the wire.
- It is made of high-tensile wire which provides greater strength and
can be used with wider post spacing.
- Class 3 galvanized wire resists rust to ensure longer fence life.
- The smooth wire and knots shield alpacas from injury (as opposed to
barbed wire).
- The tight spacing prevents intrusion of smaller animals such as skunks
or fox.
2" x 4" spacing can also be used:
- Class 3 galvanized wire resists rust to ensure longer fence life.
- The smooth wire and knots shield alpacas from injury (as opposed to
barbed wire).
Diamond Weave (V-mesh)
Kencove now carries Class 3 Galvanized V-mesh fencing. Much of
the V-mesh on the market today is not Class 3 galvanized - and is much
more susceptible to ruse.
- Diamond weave forms a strong, but flexible mesh to prevent limbs from
entanglement.
- Diamond weave makes the fence more difficult for predators to climb.
- Class 3 galvanized wire resists rust to ensure longer fence life.
